What is spiritual development, and what is the state it leads to -- awakening, enlightenment, illumination? What is the purpose of life and what is your next step toward that purpose? Is this a time for you to step into the unknown, to consolidate your gains, or to reflect upon your direction? Should you be building up your boundaries or dismanteling them? Developing power or sensitivity? Sacrificing for your ideals or looking beyond them? Learning or unlearning? Every possibility has it's place in The Map.
The Map of Heart DevelopmentWebcourse 204 in Heart Rhythm Meditation This map of adult development explains the sequence of spiritual work starting with mental clarity and concentration, then developing one's heart, and then progressing to the guidance and power of the Universal Heart. By understanding the nine steps, three in each of these three stages, you will know what to rely upon in yourself and what to work toward. "Every person has the position in life appropriate to their heart's development." The full development of your heart is the completion of your individuality, in step 6. The next three steps develop the ability to rely upon the Heart of All, which becomes integrated with your own heart. IAM offers a complete method for becoming complete. We seek first to develop commitment and harmony, then to heal the heart's wounds, open the heart, develop creativity, and discover the guidance and power that leads to the purpose of your life. The final step is a noble character, self-fulfilled, responsible, and able to be of service to the world as the heart leads. Puran will give you specific indications for each step in the path so you can self-assess your progress. We'll look for the nine steps in the development of a relationship, in commercial and academic accomplishment, in any sport, and in the inner realization of unified reality. Our model is abstract, but the course is specific and practical in pointing out how you can use the great qualities that you have developed while at the same time challenging you to take your next step. The Map of the nine steps of a spiritual life was described and used by Hazrat Inayat Khan and transmited in-depth to Puran Bair by his teacher, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, through numerous discussions with specific examples of students, over the course of several decades. The Map has been further refined and extended by Susanna and Puran Bair over the last 20 years, and will be the subject of their next book. This is the first time this teaching has been offered to a wide audience. You will track The Map's correspondence to the developmental model described by Farid-ud-din Attar in The Conference of the Birds, and also to the Seven Stations of the spiritual journey described by Abu Nasr as-Sarraj in 980. A contemporary model of the path, Spiral Dynamics, is illuminated and extended by The Map, and made workable by the practices indicated by The Map at each step. We invite you to bring and discuss any other maps of spiritual progress you may know of. Registration in this course is limited to a small number of participants. |
Course 204W registration is closed. Daily, for 10 weeks. The class will be held in the new, virtual IAM Meditation Dome, a new software version of the old Dome with many new features. |
